  • Cardiac Electrophysiology: studies of wave formation and motion in nonlinear excitable media

  • This page is one of a group of web pages that describe element of cardiac electrophysiology as it deals with wave motion in non-linear excitable media. Most of my work is an outgrowth of my interactions with Valentin Krinsky and the residual of his group in Pushchino, Russia.

  • DFG Emmy Noether Research Group: Antimicrobial Peptides

  • Our research interests center on investigations of the interaction of novel antimicrobial peptides with major components of biological membranes. In general our group uses Langmuir monolayers at air liquid interfaces and aqueous lipid dispersions as model systems to mimic biomembranes. In order to do these studies film balance measurements are applied. The results are combined with structural information on lipid films obtained by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and/or reflectivity measurments. The x-ray studies are performed at Hasylab/Desy Hamburg and the ESRF Grenoble. To get quantitative results on the binding characteristics of peptides to lipid membranes we apply isothermic titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments. Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) is a thermodynamic technique for defining how substances interact with each other. When substances bind, heat is either generated or absorbed. Measurement of this heat allows the very accurate determination of binding constants, reaction stoichiometry and a thermodynamic profile of the reaction which includes enthalpy and entropy.
