  • Department of Neurobiology at University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • One of the fastest growing neurobiology programs in the nation, the UAB Department of Neurobiology provides educational opportunities for post graduates seeking a Ph.D. in neurobiology and the neurosciences. The program is coordinated with multiple feeder programs including cell and molecular biology, the neurosciences, and an MD/Ph.D. option for medical students. A summer program called SPIN provides opportunities for undergraduates interested in the neurosciences. The department is associated with the UAB School of Medicine and the Civitan International Research Center and the recently established Evelyn F. McKnight UAB Brain Institute. Department Chair Dr. Michael Friedlander heads an outstanding international faculty involved in a broad range of programs with a focus on bench to bedside research related to developmental disabilities, unique cancer treatments, application of technologies such as FMRI and bio-genetics. Funding for the department's programs are provided through federal, state, and private sources. Faculty are well represented in a wide range of scientific publications and have also been featured on international television programs such as the National Geographic Channel and have received a wide range of prestigious awards from their peers and the scientific community.
